Research abstract

At the 2023 Wright Innovative Technology Summit, Air Force Materiel Command (AFMC) Commander General Richardson highlighted the urgent need for faster development and deployment of next-generation weapon systems, citing a significant disparity between the United States and China in fielding advanced capabilities. The Department of the Air Force (DAF) and the US Department of Defense (DoD) require accelerated innovation to maintain strategic superiority. This urgency is particularly critical for next-generation space systems, as near-peer adversaries advance their capabilities at an alarming rate. The Space Development Agency (SDA), acting as the DoD’s "constructive disruptor for space acquisition," aims to deliver the Proliferated Warfighter Space Architecture (PWSA) to ensure U.S. dominance in vital warfighting functions such as data transport, navigation, and missile tracking. The adoption of advanced modeling, simulation, and analysis (MS&A) capabilities is essential for achieving these objectives. Sedaro’s ongoing R&D effort for the SDA has demonstrated the technical feasibility and value of its commercial digital twin platform and associated open-architecture for PWSA MS&A. To further this effort, Sedaro, in collaboration with Stellar Solutions, Inc., proposes to develop an open-source “PWSA Digital Engineering (DE) Software Library” that enables the SDA to efficiently aggregate authoritative models of the PWSA and integrate data and third-party solutions with PWSA digital twin modeling. Sedaro will build the baseline PWSA DE Library through a proof-of-concept (PoC) project, leveraging the PWSA Digital Twin to assess the performance and resilience of the current PWSA network architecture in delivering communications services. This approach addresses the need for comprehensive and efficient MS&A across the system lifecycle, from requirements definition to testing, autonomy training, and tactical decision support. The PWSA DE Library will support integration across a diverse set of data sources and tools, preventing vendor lock-in and encouraging competitive acquisition of digital twin technologies. Sedaro's agile project execution, combined with its high-fidelity, cloud-native simulation framework and open-architecture, positions it as a leader in meeting the MS&A challenges for PWSA. This collaboration, supported by Stellar Solutions' expertise in distributed space system engineering, creates a unique opportunity to fulfill the ambitious goals of digital engineering and maintain U.S. defense superiority.
