Research abstract

Recent engineering and manufacturing innovations have made the concept of a hypersonic vehicle development a reality for many military and civilian organizations. Due to the cost of hypersonic tests, modeling and simulation capabilities have become critical for aerospace engineers. Accurate, full-order models (FOMs) based on the Navier-Stokes equations, while valuable, are computationally expensive. Depending on the scale of the simulation, computation times can easily approach thousands of hours even on powerful computing clusters. For this reason, approximate, simplified models, given the name of reduced order models (ROMs), are invaluable for their capability of providing accurate results under a reduced computational timeline and footprint. Nevertheless, the coupled multi-factor nature of hypersonic flows has delayed the deployment of a quality hypersonic ROM. In this proposal, nou Systems, Inc, in partnership with Sandia National Laboratories and NexGen Analytics, proposes Chronos – “Componentized Hypersonic Reduction in Order for Neoteric Optimized Simulations”. Chronos will focus on the development of a component-based reduced order model using time-adaptive basis for use in hypersonic boundary layer modeling.
