Research abstract

the objective of this proposal is to develop a low cost coating that provides increased corrosion resistance for application on automobile exhaust system components subjected to high temperatures as well as corrosive coastal environments. The methods available for developing corrosion resistant coatings, such as physical vapor deposition (PVD) or low-pressure plasma spraying (LPPS) involve extremely high capital expenditure and sometimes involve a high reject rate. In contrast to the above processes operated at high temperatures, the proposed electrochemical codeposition of inert particles in a metallic matrix can be carried out below 60 degrees C. Because electroplating is very suitable method to produce metal coatings, electrochemical codeposition is a good alternative in the field of composite coatings. It combines the advantages of metal electroplating with those of composite materials to produce low cost coatings. Any application where high temperatures are experienced and dependable coatings are required would gain from this technology.
