Research abstract

Hydrogen fuel is a fuel source of growing interest to the military due to its immense theoretical availability. Via electrolysis, hydrogen fuel is available at any location warfighters could gain access to water. However, because seawater is contaminated with a high number of other particulates (<60K PPM), traditional electrolysis, which uses high purity water, is not possible. In addition, the Marine Corps requires a ruggedized system that is lightweight and power source insensitive. While small scale hydrogen generators do exist, they are intended for a laboratory setting making them much too fragile to be of use in a combat environment. As a result, Lynntech is proposing its Seawater Electrolyzed to Hydrogen (SETH) generator that expands upon Lynntech’s extensive electrolysis technologies to accommodate seawater. Additionally, the SETH generator utilizes high TRL, reliable technologies that could be built and used at the end of a Phase II effort. SETH will also be capable of multiple modes of operation, allowing for warfighters to use the mode that best suits their needs. SETH with be compact and transportable, and capable of interfacing with other existing military equipment to boost efficiency. This generator has the potential to significantly reduce the logistical burden of transporting hydrogen fuel and open the door to larger applications of  hydrogen in the future.
