Research abstract

In the face of mounting energy inefficiencies within the U.S. manufacturing sector, the Department of Defense (DoD) and the Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) confront a critical challenge. The DLA, which procures a significant portion of the military's parts – many being energy-intensive Cast and Forge (C&F) components vital for national security – seeks to substantially diminish its operational costs and environmental impact. The "Securing Defense-Critical Supply Chains" report indicates a massive potential for savings if energy efficiencies are realized within these C&F processes. Sedaro Corporation proposes a transformative solution utilizing their cloud-scalable digital twin platform enhanced with Generative AI (GenAI) modeling. This innovative approach will allow precise energy consumption analyses and the optimization of manufacturing processes. By accurately predicting energy demands, the platform will enable the DLA to make informed decisions that reduce energy use and encourage suppliers towards more sustainable practices. In Phase I, Sedaro will develop Open Life Cycle Analysis (OpenLCA) compatible models and interfaces to assess and reduce energy consumption and emissions in discrete manufacturing processes. The project leverages real-world data from A&B Foundry to fine-tune process models, providing the DLA with a robust proof of concept and paving the way for a scalable solution that promises significant cost reductions and supports the DoD's sustainability initiatives.
