Research abstract

This Phase II Project will scale up and optimize the electrocodeposition of quasicrystalline materials on aluminum alloys and stainless steel. This novel single-step process will apply a superior non-stick scratch resistant quasicrystalline coating toflat stock and formed cookware items. This coating is expected to meet the Army's requirements for field cookware. Broad based test results from Phase I provided information that confirms this new coating process produces coatings that have combinedfeatures that appear to surpass similar features of any commercial product currently available. The demonstrated advantages are non-stick characteristics similar to PTFE, greater resistance to wear, excellent corrosion protection, extremely low surfacefriction, high temperature compatibility and excellent heat distribution. The foremost technical objective will be to develop a matrix of process specifications enabling scale-up and repeated product coating operation. A working relationship has beenestablished with a major cookware manufacturer and distributor to streamline the commercialization process. In addition to the superior features that have been identified to date, the potential for development of a production line
