Research abstract

Local environmental regulations are imposing ever-stricter emissions limits on internal combustion engines operating at commercial and military airfields. Typically, these Auxiliary Ground Equipment (AGE) engines have been either diesel engines ranging from 50 to 400 hp or gas turbine engines ranging from approximately 30 kW to 150 kW. The high emissions produced by diesel engines, particularly NOx, has prompted increasing attention toward alternative auxiliary power generation technologies. Precision Combustion, Inc. is proposing an innovative gas turbine combustor that will allow compact, mobile auxiliary ground power units to run at near-zero emissions levels. Phase I work will include subscale demonstration testing and cost and feasibility studies. Phase II will include extended durability testing, prototype production and development of a production and implementation plan.
