Research abstract

Naval aircraft that operate in marine environments are susceptible to a variety of wetting and drying events that can lead to numerous corrosion problems. This is especially true within engine compressor regions where temperature cycling can cause water evaporation and condensation events, leading to salt accumulation and contaminant aggregation. As a consequence of this cyclic, marine atmospheric environment, multiple aircraft propulsion system components require frequent repair and/or replacement due to severe galvanic corrosion and pitting, leading to high maintenance costs, increased engine removals, and reduced aircraft readiness. The Navy desires new corrosion protection technologies to extend engine lifetimes and readiness to meet future operational requirements. Luna Labs has developed an advanced hybrid inorganic-organic coating that mitigates galvanic corrosion around any metallic couple by providing excellent physical and electrical barrier protection in corrosive environments. It works by reducing the kinetics of galvanic corrosion by up to two orders of magnitude. It is a disruptive technology suitable for easy spray application to OEM components or during Depot refurbishment operations.
