Research abstract

Gas turbines in marine environments face highly corrosive conditions. The high temperatures of compressors evaporate water, causing salt and contaminants to accumulate. Bolted flange interfaces also introduce damaging galvanic couplings. This leads to frequent repairs and replacements of components in military aircraft propulsion systems resulting in high maintenance costs, increased engine removals, and reduced aircraft readiness. To mitigate these corrosive effects, IBC proposes an electrically insulative coating that will be highly resistant to corrosion and wear. The solution will also need to exhibit properties of high friction and be applied to martensitic stainless steels (17-4PH and Jethete M152), titanium (Ti-6Al-4V), and Inconels (IN600, IN718, IN909). IBC proposes to develop an amorphous Silicon Carbide (a-SiC) coating, deposited using a non-line-of-sight, low-temperature Plasma-Assisted Chemical Vapor Deposition process. This coating will be based on IBC’s current carbon-based coatings, Diamond-Like Carbon. Cost for Base:  $139,982.50  //  Cost for Base plus TABA: $146,482.50 Cost for Option:  $99,981.56
