Research abstract

Cost, load growth, reliability, security, and environmental issues are pushing power system design and operation analysis requirements to new levels of complexity. Past efforts to address these problems through the use of enterprise-wide data management, intelligent devices, and other advanced technologies often have resulted in unforeseen problems that decrease overall system performance and increase cost. What is needed is a multidiscipline, multi-fidelity, integrated analysis and information management approach that can be used to evaluate new technologies together, within the context of overall system operation. A previously developed Distributed Engineering Workstation (DEW) and Graph Trace Analysis (GTA) approach appears to be well-suited to address this need. DEW is currently being used by leading research organizations to address complex system analysis and information management problems that previously could not be solved. This project will apply the DEW/GTA approach to the evaluation of power system operations that have a high penetration of renewable energy resources. Commercial Applications and other Benefits as described by the awardee The new capability should find use in commercial utility operations, design and planning, training, concept demonstration and development, and the evaluation of new operating procedures and government regulation. The proposed work could be applied to a large number of Army, Navy, homeland security, and industry-critical infrastructure design and control areas.
