Research abstract

The Army seeks an environmentally hardened distributed sensing solution that provides persistent intrusion detection, RF and environmental monitoring of the Reagan Test Site (RTS) on the remote islands within the Kwajalein Atoll with the ability to stream data and results to the RTS Mission Control Center.áThe solution must operate in extreme weather conditions in an autonomous fashion for a minimum of a year and an objective of greater than 2 years due to the limited physical access to the sensors after emplaced.áFor this effort we will extend our established design to include a suite of rugged sensors to enable intrusion detection, RF sensing and weather monitoring via a multi-modal sensing approach (RF, radar, seismic, acoustic, visible, infrared, environmental, etc.).á The sensor nodes will be hardened to survive in extreme weather conditions.á Sensor power will be provided by a rechargeable Lithium-Ion battery, and various remote power sources and energy harvesting technologies along with active power management (sleep/wake) will enable the sensor to operate autonomously for at least 2 years.á
