Research abstract

79623S Published reports show that the Simple Object Access Protocol (SOAP) represents a significant bottleneck in grid computing architectures ¿ a bottleneck that will become more pronounced as new applications that directly utilize SOAP services are written. This project will develop compression technology to build a complete SOAP implementation that provides significant computational savings in serialization and deserialization of documents. The approach involves the enhancement of an existing compression technology, which has been shown to achieve as much as 550% better compression ratios than other methods on small Web Services documents. Phase I will experimentally verify the performance characteristics of the SOAP implementation on real DOE data performance of grid computing environments. Commercial Applications and Other Benefits as described by the awardee: The technology should support DOE cluster and supercomputing initiatives that will significantly enhance and enable DOE¿s core scientific and applied computing missions. The same technology also should find commercial applications in pharmaceutical R&D, financial data mining, and oil exploration, and as a performance enhancer for general Web Services architectures.
