Research abstract

New, lower-cost launch systems require a modern, economical Guidance, Navigation, and Control (GN&C) system. Microcosm has recently developed plans and prototype hardware for such a system with an order of magnitude lower cost than existing systems. However, a key problem is flight validation of the GN&C system without risking a high value payload or launcher. The opportunity now exists to develop a complete, low-cost, generic flight GN&C package and validate the performance of the system on a near-term flight of the PacAstro PA-X sounding rocket. Specifically, Phase I will demonstrate feasibility by specifying the components, demonstrating the flight computer, and verifying controllability through 6 degree-of-freedom simulation. Phase II will deliver and fly the full GN&C system on the first PacAstro PA-X test flight, currently scheduled for 1997. Phase II includes the development of actuators by PacAstro. The results of Phase II will be to transform the PA-X flight from unguided to guided and controlled, thereby decreasing range safety concerns, and to create a fully developed and validated, near-term, low-cost, generic GN&C system for launch vehicles.
