Research abstract

HyPerComp is developing a state-of-the-art time-domain CEM technology known as TEMPUS (Time-Domain EM Parallel Unstructured Simulator). TEMPUS is a complete industrial grade CEM environment that includes all aspects of a CEM simulation such as CADgeometry modeling/repair, unstructured gridding for full-scale targets with general materials, parallel run set up (for PC- and workstation clusters) and higher order accurate solvers for Maxwell's equations, and postprocessing utilities for solutionvisualization and extraction of final results like bistatic/monostatic RCS, SAR images, and range profiles. The proposed Phase I activity addresses a number of topics covering the entire simulation process from start to finish to achieve dramaticimprovements in accuracy and reduced cycle time. The overarching goals are to achieve:¿ A factor 10 improvement in TEMPUS performance (reduce cycle time, memory requirement and problem set up) by the end of 2003¿ A factor 100 improvement over the next 3-5 yearsSpecifically,Phase I will address 1) development of a hybrid TEMPUS/Xpatch (a high frequency tool), and 2) implementation of a high order absorbing outer boundary conditions In addition to serving the DoD interests in RCS and ATR applications, the time-domain CEM has numerous commercial applications. Some of them are 1) patient specific bioEM studies of hyperthermia treatment of cancer using microwave radiation, 2) study ofcellular phone EM effects on human, and 3) EMC/EMI studies of high power electronic circuits. Also, the general geometry computational framework of CEM has synergy and commonality with other disciplines such as computational fluid dynamics (CFD),acoustics and structures.
