Research abstract
Holochip's Localization and Mapping Artificial Intelligence Application (LAMA) addresses a critical need for indoor mapping and localization in disaster response and homeland security operations. Traditional mobile devices struggle to map disaster sites when GPS or network connectivity is unreliable, limiting their effectiveness in complex indoor environments. LAMA leverages advanced AI and simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) algorithms to provide a robust solution that operates on existing consumer mobile devices, such as Apple iPads and Android smartphones. LAMA's innovative technology emulates human spatial memory by using AI, video, and directional data to identify and remember routes within indoor spaces. It offers users streamlined 3D indoor mapping, ensuring a horizontal accuracy of <5 feet. It can identify and track the device's location in real-time, generating simplified 3D schematics that display the user's location and path. This capability significantly enhances situational awareness and operational efficiency for first responders and other users navigating complex indoor environments. In Phase I of this effort, LAMA's technical feasibility was demonstrated, achieving key milestones such as real-time mapping, precise localization, and integration wiht existing mobile devices. The results showed that LAMA could create accurate 3D maps, track user locations, and enhance emergency response operations. The ability to handle large, complex indoor environments and integrate third-party maps distinguishes LAMA from current technologies that are limited by map size and lack of interoperability. Commercial applications for LAMA include use by emergency response teams, insurance investigators, architects, construction engineers, fire safety personnel, and disaster recovery managers. The potential market for LAMA is substantial, with the global indoor mapping and navigation market expected to reach $10.78 billion by 2027, growing at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 13.0% from 2020. This market includes sectors such as public safety, healthcare, retail, transportation, and logistics, where reliable indoor mapping is crucial for efficient operations. Compared to existing technologies, LAMA offers superior performance with its ability to provide continuous and comprehensive mapping experiences without additional custom hardware. It extends the lifespan of existing mobile devices, reducing electronic waste and promoting sustainable practices. LAMA's compatibility with widely-used platforms ensures easy deployment and broad accessibility, making it an environmentally friendly solution. LAMA is an innovative, technically feasible, and commercially viable solution that addresses a critical need for precise indoor mapping and localization. Its advanced capabilities, environmental benefits, and broad market potential position it as a leading technology for homeland security and emergency response.
