Research abstract

The recent and rapid changes in the Arctic environment elevate its military, economic, and geopolitical strategic importance. This evolving landscape necessitates heightened multi-domain awareness to safeguard national interests, monitor adversary activities, and ensure regional stability. Current technology gaps in detecting and monitoring diverse threats under the sea, on land, and in the air underscore the urgent need for innovative solutions that can operate autonomously and reliably in this austere environment. In response to this need, nou Systems Inc. (nSI), developers of AI-enhanced Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) sensor technology in Huntsville AL have formed a multidisciplinary team and begun developing a fully autonomous interconnected network of sensor nodes. Each node consists of a combination of AI-augmented sensor technology in a unique, robust package. Our sensing platform maintains robust network interconnectivity and data transmission capabilities for real-time alarm transmission in communication-degraded and GPS-denied settings. Lastly, the sensors leverage advanced, low-power AI-enhanced threat/anomaly detection algorithms derived from past and ongoing nSI programs. Phase I efforts will focus on modeling and simulation to understand trades, design refinement, and key subsystem demonstrations. We expect to fabricate our first prototype system during the Phase I Option and perform preliminary testing in at simulated environment. Phase II will culminate with testing an integrated system deployed in the Arctic Ocean or in Alaska. This work will provide a strong basis and justification for continued Phase III, where we will work closely with NAWCAD to begin relevant operational field tests.
