Research abstract

An F-35 on a critical mission over hostile waters experiences catastrophic engine failure and the pilot is forced to eject. Now an isolated person (IP) awaiting rescue, the pilot is adrift in the middle of a vast ocean, battered by rough seas and high winds. Thick cloud cover and heavy rain reduce visibility to near zero, making it virtually impossible for Combat Search and Rescue (CSAR) forces to spot the tiny life raft bobbing in the turbulent waves. As the IP struggles to stay afloat, they reach for their emergency signaling devices, only to find that the battery on their radio is dead and their flares are waterlogged and useless. Injured during the ejection and rapidly losing body heat in the frigid water, the pilot is unable to actively signal for help. Their only hope is that the CSAR team will be able to locate them before hypothermia, dehydration, or enemy forces claim their life. The absence of the RF Activated Rescue Beacon in this scenario turns what could have been a swift, targeted rescue into a prolonged and perilous operation with a tragically uncertain outcome. It underscores the critical importance of this technology in enhancing the effectiveness and survivability of CSAR missions, and the urgent need to equip our isolated personnel with every advantage in their fight for survival.
