Research abstract

This project aims to develop and optimize a multi-stage catalytic cartridge-based device, referred to as the Advanced Nanocatalytic Converter (ANC), for the conversion of toxic gases such as ethylene oxide (EtO) into benign components. The project is structured around four specific aims: Aim 1: Development of an Intelligent High-Pressure Chamber (IHPC) - We will construct a specialized IHPC that is computer-controlled and equipped with advanced sensors for safe and efficient EtO analysis. This chamber will allow EtO gas, following standard sterilization processes, to flow through a four-stage ANC cartridge where it will be decomposed into non-toxic byproducts or permanently trapped. It will enable real-time monitoring and precise control of gas and volatile organic molecule concentrations and pressures, enhancing the safety and effectiveness of the decomposition process. Aim 2: Optimization of the ANC Cartridge - Concurrently with Aim 1, we will enhance the conversion efficiency of the ANC by testing various materials and configurations across four distinct stages:1. A novel catalytic system converting EtO to nontoxic compounds. 2. A high surface area, material for trapping EtO and its byproducts. 3. Metal catalysts and solid oxidizers to further reduce any residual EtO to benign products. 4. A high-efficiency scrubber to eliminate all remaining volatile organic compounds.  Aim 3: Design and Prototype of the ANC Cartridge - This aim focuses on the engineering design and rapid prototyping of the ANC cartridge using 3D printing technology capable of handling high-performance materials. The prototype will explore different methods of enhancing EtO conversion and incorporate sensors to monitor each stage.Aim 4: Integration and Testing with Commercial Sterilizers - We will integrate the fully developed ANC cartridge with an EtO source and assess its efficiency in converting EtO to non-toxic byproducts using various analytical techniques. This phase will validate the functionality of the ANC cartridge. The research and development of the Advanced Nanocatalytic Converter (ANC) for ethylene oxide (EtO) conversion to nontoxic compounds present significant benefits and commercial applications that align with current environmental and health safety needs, particularly in the medical sterilization industry.
