Research abstract
To meet the needs of the Defense Health Agency (DHA), Hecto Group, LLC (Hecto Group) proposes a novel solution to the problem of ethylene oxide mitigation by modifying a newly developed technology used in air purification. With the increasing health concerns of ethylene oxide and its toxic effect on people, the EPA has enacted stricter emissions regulations. Hecto Group proposes a novel air purification technology capable of mitigating ethylene oxide emissions as well as minimizing byproduct formation. The technology, known as Micron Pure, is used within the CerroZone Mobile air purifier, developed by Micron Pure, a Hecto Group company, and licensed for manufacturing and commercialization by Marmon Holdings, a Berkshire Hathaway company. The CerroZone mobile air purifier is approved for use as an FDA 510(k) Class II medical device. The objectives of this proposal are to: (1) Evaluate Micron Pure technology in eliminating ethylene oxide. (2) Investigate the degree of byproduct formation and subsequent elimination of these byproducts. (3) Test Micron Pure technology with existing ethylene oxide medical sterilization equipment. (4) Assess the degree of retrofit needed to supplement existing ethylene oxide medical sterilization equipment. A successful outcome to these trials will ensure that the safety and environmental sustainability of current technologies is improved without causing undue disruption to ethylene oxide sterilization processes. The goal of Objective 1 is to show the percent removal of ethylene oxide from an airstream, while Objective 2 will quantify all byproducts formed and their concentration in relation to the target ethylene oxide concentration. Objective 3 will perform a case study with a variety of ethylene oxide sterilization equipment and lead to Objective 4, where implementation of Micron Pure technology with existing ethylene oxide sterilization equipment is assessed for its ease of retrofit.
