Research abstract

Field testing of munitions systems is an essential part of developing new capabilities for the warfighter and ensuring that systems work when lives are on the line. Current testing systems require manual calibration, which increases the cost/time required and limits the total amount of testing that can occur. In response to the Army specified need for a portable optical sensor that can capture high-quality real-time imagery data during missile tests Arete proposes an automated solution that reduces labor required for setup while improving the accuracy of derived test quantities. AretķÆs Autonomous Profiling and Tracking system (APT) constitutes a network of standalone sensors comprised of multiple imaging and geolocation sensors mounted within automated pointing and tracking hardware to successfully detect and track munition either at launch or on arrival downrange and evaluate their performance. Working with subcontractor pico-grid (experts on austere sensor operation and data management) APT will provide an enhancement for test/eval capabilities for the Army.
