Research abstract

Rapid threat detection and situational awareness are critical on the battlefield. The mm-wave spectral band has many properties of interest to the warfighter, including chemical signature discernment, detection through shallow dirt, and imaging through certain obscurants. However, a compact, uncooled imager hat meets the video-rate data collection demands of real-time detection is not yet available to the warfighter. The proposed effort focuses on the development of a focal plane array of high-speed transducer pixels within a broader mm-wave imager technology to provide personnel with real-time threat detection. This low SWaP-C mm-wave imager system is intended to enable ground vehicles or class I/II UAS to rapidly analyze and assess potential chemical threats of aerosolized clouds and IED threats in terrain.
