Research abstract

This proposal aims to address the capability gap in the fit and performance of personnel body armor within the Army. Current ballistic plates and gear, available in discrete sizes, often fail to fit all warfighters properly, causing discomfort, injuries, heat buildup, and distractions that impair mission performance. Some warfighters even remove ballistic plates due to discomfort, forfeiting lifesaving protection. Body armor has evolved from medieval chainmail to modern ceramic composites and ultra- high-molecular-weight polyethylene, enhancing protection and comfort, yet fit issues persist. These include chafing, bruising, limited mobility, heat retention, and inadequate protection, with female warfighters facing additional challenges like breast compression, poor fit, and suboptimal weight distribution. Male warfighters also struggle with fit due to anatomical differences. The Ballistic Carrier System (BCS) Platform offers a solution by enabling individual adaptation, providing a supportive gear platform that moves with the body to eliminate friction and discomfort. Its shock absorbers enhance airflow, reducing heat exhaustion. Ensuring a proper fit for all warfighters, regardless of body type, is crucial for their safety and performance. Commercialization will reach beyond the Department of Defense, and into federal and law enforcement agencies, followed by impact reduction opportunities in sports internationally.
