Research abstract

Traditional optical sensors used for autonomous operations are hindered by some of the most common battlefield environments. Legacy operational tools, including LiDAR, Radar, thermal imaging, and night vision each play an important role in providing warfighters with the situational awareness necessary to operate effectively, yet these solutions are vulnerable to visual obstacles like rain, fog, dust, and smoke. Even imaging capabilities that can provide data through visual obstacles still fail to provide the high-resolution, high-fidelity imagery necessary to accurately assess dynamic situations. Given the harsh and inherently high-risk operations for warfighters, it is imperative to design and integrate novel sensing modalities that keep pace with dynamic battlefield developments. TeraDAR has developed the first ever terahertz high-resolution (+500 GHz) imaging radar on a chip, enabling low-cost, advanced perception capabilities and secure terahertz communication signal transmission. TeraDAR can operate effectively despite hostile environment conditions, such as rain, snow, sleet, fog, dust, wind, hail, lighting or light objects. TeraDAR is a new category of sensor filling the core sensing capability gaps for commercial and defense future autonomous systems and geospatial data collection. TeraDAR operates across a variety of applications with flexible SWAP, meaning end-users can customize the sensor according to their immediate needs.
