Research abstract

Collaborative uncrewed maritime vehicles (UMVs) can enable a variety of novel missions and provide decision superiority through ubiquitous and persistent data collection with situational understanding at the edge. To realize this potential, we must address several challenges, including the ability for collaborative, heterogeneous UMVs to perform complex and varied tasks with little to no human intervention, possibly in environments with restricted communications. Collaborative UMVs must support the variety of requirements imposed by diverse Navy missions, which can only be economically tested via simulation. Charles River Analytics has performed prior work to address each of these challenges. Our collaborative autonomy works in environments with low-bandwidth and intermittent communication and in the context of uncertain, inaccurate, and intermittent perception information. We will combine these technologies with our extensive maritime domain expertise and our experience testing systems both in water and in simulation. Collaborative Operations with Maritime Platforms in Autonomous SwarmS (COMPASS) will demonstrate and enable mission-relevant collaborative autonomy for UMVs, addressing a critical need for the Navy. Importantly, COMPASS will focus on evaluating UMV collaboration in three different scenarios to cover the breadth of potential Navy missions.
