Research abstract

This project represents a significant leap forward in maritime autonomy, harnessing the sophisticated simulation environment provided by VxSIM, developed by teammate, Dynamic Dimension Technologies. At the heart of this initiative lies the AI-Routesframework, a novel approach to enhancing the pathfinding capabilities of Unmanned Maritime Vehicles (UMVs) within the unpredictable and challenging maritime environment. By integrating state-of-the-art modeling and simulation tools with advanced AI algorithms, this project aims to refine the development, assessment, and deployment strategies for autonomy systems facing the harsh realities of the ocean.Central to our approach is the use of AI-Routes, which employs a groundbreaking method to teach UMVs how to navigate complex maritime scenarios more effectively. The methodology prioritizes the learning of preferred paths from historical data, ensuring that navigational decisions are both optimal and in line with established navigational standards. Furthermore, the project emphasizes the importance of Explainable AI, allowing for greater interpretability of the decision-making processes underlying the UMV's autonomous navigation.By leveraging the combined power of VxSIM's simulation capabilities and the innovative AI-Routes algorithm, this project is set to redefine what is possible in maritime autonomy. It promises to enhance the reliability, efficiency, and safety of UMVs, enabling them to undertake a wider range of missions in environments that were previously deemed too risky or unpredictable. Through this endeavor, we aim to unlock new possibilities in maritime exploration, surveillance, and operation, marking a new chapter in the advancement of autonomous maritime systems.
