Research abstract
The U.S. Navy seeks a flame detector capable of identifying flaming fires quickly while also discriminating against false and nuisance alarm sources. Previous flame detectors have experienced nuisance and false alarms due to lighting conditions and movement of equipment and personnel in the monitored space. Nuisance and false alarms have caused damage to shipboard equipment and have caused a loss of confidence in the credible performance of the system by ship personnel. PacMar Technologies' Infrared Monitoring System Advisor Functional Export (IMSAFE) enables predictive maintenance of shipboard electrical equipment. The IMSAFE network of infrared cameras easily monitors small or large spaces containing not only electrical equipment and rotating machinery but also high-energy batteries in maritime platforms, land-based assets, or industrial plants. Thermal anomalies detected by the AI/ML controller enable expedient responses, thereby avoiding potential catastrophes to people, assets, and the environment. The alarming function of the IMSAFE system can notify an operator via text or email messaging about detected thermal anomalies. Notifications can also be configured to specify the specific camera locations via GPS coordinates. Depending upon the system configuration, a user can remotely connect to a camera to distinguish false alarms and allow first responders to monitor situations in real time when responding to fires. IMSAFE is a reliable, effective flame detector will increase crew and ship safety by continuously monitoring for possible fires. The system uses readily available and supported Commercial-Off-The-Shelf (COTS) components and advanced AI and ML algorithms to provide early identification of fires and the early activation of applicable firefighting systems.
