Research abstract

The proposed project aims to develop a groundbreaking self-disinfecting plasma fabric (SDPF) for next-generation Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear (CBRN) protective suits. The SDPF technology, commercialized by Cerebral Energy based on teh work of Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory (PPPL), leverages atmospheric pressure plasma (APP) to actively decontaminate the suit surface and neutralize a wide range of CBRN agents, including chemical warfare agents such as mustard (HD), soman (GD), and nerve agents (VX).ĀThe SDPF technology addresses the limitations of current CBRN protective gear, such as heavy weight, high thermal burden, and limited coverage, by integrating plasma generation capabilities directly into the fabric through a specialized weaving technique. This innovative approach eliminates the need for bulky external power sources and enables the creation of lightweight, flexible, and breathable CBRN suits that provide enhanced protection and improved comfort for the wearer.ĀThe Phase I effort will focus on demonstrating the feasibility and effectiveness of the SDPF technology through rigorous testing against CBRN agent simulants, optimization of the fabric composition and plasma generation parameters, and assessment of the fabric's durability and washability. The project team, led by Principal Investigator Dr. Tyler Dolmetsch and supported by a group of expert consultants from PPPL, will conduct research and development activities at state-of-the-art facilities, including plasma science and materials characterization laboratories.ĀThe successful development of the SDPF technology will revolutionize CBRN protection for military personnel, first responders, and civilian workers in hazardous environments. By providing a highly effective, comfortable, and easy-to-maintain solution for CBRN defense, the SDPF technology will significantly enhance the safety and operational capabilities of individuals in the face of evolving CBRN threats.ĀCerebral Energy has developed a comprehensive commercialization strategy to bring the SDPF technology to market, targeting both military and civilian sectors. The company will leverage its partnerships with PPPL, textile manufacturers, and defense agencies to accelerate the development and deployment of the technology, while also pursuing a robust intellectual property protection and regulatory compliance strategy.ĀThe proposed project builds upon a strong foundation of prior research in APP decontamination and advanced textile technologies, as evidenced by the work of PPPPL and other experts in the field. By combining cutting-edge plasma science with innovative materials engineering, the SDPF technology represents a significant advancement in CBRN protection and promises to deliver a game-changing solution for the defense and security communities.
