Research abstract

Cerebral Energy has partnered with research teams at NASA (Langley and Glenn centers) to further develop NASA’s Solid-state Architecture Batteries for Enhanced Rechargeability and Safety (SABERS) energy system.  SABERS is NASA’s all-solid-state lithium metal-based approach to making batteries lighter, safer, more energy dense, and engineered specifically to meet the challenges of aircraft and space systems applications. This effort is in support of increasing available on-orbit power in an ESPA or ESPA Grande class vehicles, as well as other SmallSat and other space operations.  We intend to further develop the SABERS battery technology to 1,000 Wh/kg and high C-values as an associated electrical system to support DoD objectives. The current SABERS battery has verified chemistry of over 586 Wh/kg in NASA laboratories and coin cells. This specific energy doubles the current SoA lithium-ion batteries used for SmallSat builds, immediately increasing the available energy for missions. The SABERS batteries can be fabricated in any cell format, allowing for simple provisioning into existing platforms.
