Research abstract

Distributed coherent radar (DCR) is a game-changing radio frequency (RF) technology that enables a collection of independent RF systems to cooperate together as a team, resulting in significant performance improvements when compared to what one of those RF systems can achieve on its own. DCR has two fundamental modes of coherent operation from which all other radars modes are built upon. The first coherent mode is cohere-on-transmit (COT), which achieves a coherent summation of the waveforms transmitted by each RF system resulting at a target, producing an N3 increase in signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) compared to the SNR of a single RF systems. The second coherent mode is cohere-on-receive (COR), which achieves a coherent summation of the waveforms received from the target, producing an N2 SNR gain. The COT and COR SNR gains translate directly into increased maximum detection range of targets, or conversely, detection of smaller targets. This will reduce platform payload size, weight, and power (SWaP) requirements, thus allowing smaller, lower power unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to carry the RF systems.Scalability of the sensor team offers the performance equivalent of a large, expensive radar but comprised ofseveral small, low-cost radars made possible by coherent aggregation of the individual radar team members.
