Research abstract

The current solid rocket motor (SRM) industrial base suffers from over-consolidation and reliance on legacy practices, both of which have led to the inability to produce solid motors at a pace and quality that can meet the strategic and tactical needs of the US and its allies.  Evolution Space is a growing vertically-integrated SRM manufacturer that leverages novel techniques to develop, iterate, and produce SRMs at low cost on an abbreviated timeline.  The technology readiness level of these motors is increasing, with hundreds of static firings and several operational demonstrations, including those at hypersonic velocities and a short-range ballistic vehicle that reached space.  After verifying customer and market applicability during Phase I, Phase II aims to demonstrate DoD TRL 7 via a Testing and Evaluation effort which pairs a SRM prototype with a representative tactical or testing system in a relevant operational environment.  The proposed demonstration can propel a subscale HACM- or ARRW-like simulated munition to velocities in excess of Mach 5, whether in flight or on a sled track, while recording engine performance data.  This data will be used as the primary evidence in a report detailing the system’s performance and applicability as a propulsion system for next-generation hypersonic munitions and future commercial systems with similar architectures.
