Research abstract

This project will adapt and integrate AstraNav’s M-GPS® navigation solution into a small unmanned system (sUAS). This solution will be non-emitting and will enable sUAS to operate in GNSS-denied environments, using AstraNav's proprietary algorithms to convert ambient magnetic field information into 3D navigational data - position, velocity, and altitude (PVA). M-GPS® is a standalone system; however, it can also augment and/or provide a redundant source of navigational data to other systems (i.e., GNSS). This will include an initial effort to make M-GPS® compatible with the DAF MOSA for PNT data: ASPN program.  In particular, this project will seek to demonstrate an on-board system that 1) is capable of measuring, recording, and processing the ambient magnetic fields in its immediate vicinity (including ingesting existing open source 'magnetic maps' if they are available) at different speeds and altitudes, 2) enables processing of the magnetic field information off-line and on-line to generate magnetic field maps, 3) outputs PVA information of the sUAS, including without using satellite-based navigation as input; 4) uses the M-GPS-derived PVA information as a source of navigational data, 5) shows compatibility with DAF-preferred Modular Open System Approaches (MOSA), and additionally 6) serves as a GNSS-spoofing indicator.
