Research abstract

As satellites become more complex and multifunctional, the traditional methods of data transmission and aggregation in the satellite unit face limitations in terms of bandwidth, power consumption, cable mass, and integration density. Herein lies the imperative for co-packaged optical I/O solutions utilizing silicon photonics due to limitations of electrical I/O scalability for high performance FPGA and processors. ĀBy integrating optical components directly onto the same package as the electronic chips, co-packaged optical I/O offers a transformative approach to satellite communication architecture. Silicon photonics, with its ability to leverage existing semiconductor manufacturing processes and its compatibility with foundry complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) technology, emerges as a promising candidate to address the pressing needs for higher data rates, reduced power consumption, and enhanced reliability in intra-satellite communication systems. The adoption of co-packaged optical I/O using silicon photonics heralds a new era in satellite communication technology, offering a host of advantages over traditional electrical interconnects. The integration of multispectral sensors and high-bandwidth data communication, as evidenced by projects such as Landsat, Sentinel, and the Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) mission, exemplifies the potential for advanced Earth observation and communication capabilities. These satellite projects utilize multispectral sensors to capture imagery across different wavelengths, enabling scientists to monitor environmental changes and phenomena with unprecedented detail. High-bandwidth data communication links ensure timely transmission of vast amounts of imagery and data collected by these satellites, supporting critical applications such as environmental monitoring, disaster management, and scientific research on a global scale. As the space industry continues to push the boundaries of exploration and connectivity, the integration of silicon photonics-based optical I/O with multispectral sensors and high-bandwidth data communication represents a pivotal step towards unlocking the full potential of satellite communications and enabling a new era of space-based applications and services. The key enabling technology will be radiation hardened optical interconnect modules, which will explore best known methods to radiation hardened photonics and electronics components and then treat radiation reliability from device to system level thereby ensuring reliable operation for long timescales consistent with space grade qualification.
