Research abstract

In contested environments, legacy water sources can be compromised by CBRN or environmental contaminants, making traditional water supply methods risky and unreliable. Current AWG systems are designed to generate water from the atmosphere but are not inherently equipped to filter out airborne contaminates. This technical gap poses significant risks to the health and safety of military personnel who rely on AWG systems for hydration and water intensive tasks such as medical, hygiene, cooking, and equipment decontamination. These challenges can be overcome by developing a robust filtration solution that seamlessly integrates with AWG systems to ensure delivery of safe, potable fresh water irrespective of air quality. The integration of advanced CBRN filters with AWG systems is a transformative opportunity to enhance the DoD’s capability to provide clean water in contested environments. Ensuring a continuous supply of safe water reduces logistical burdens and increases the self-sufficiency of military units, allowing them to operate more effectively in isolated or hostile environments. Protecting troops from CBRN contaminants directly impacts their health and performance, reducing the risk of illness and maintaining combat effectiveness. By leveraging advanced filtration technologies, DoD can maintain operational superiority even in environments where water sources are compromised by CBRN threats.
