Research abstract

OndaVia proposes a new instrument to monitor nitrogen levels in wastewater treatment. This instrument uses a technique called surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) to measure ammonia and hydroxylamine. It will be automated and provide real-time data to optimize treatment processes. Eutrophication is a problem where excess nutrients cause algal blooms harming aquatic life and threatening drinking water. Nitrogen is a key nutrient and its removal from wastewater is energy-intensive. Traditional methods use nitrification/denitrification which requires oxygen and a carbon source. Anammox bacteria offer a more efficient way to remove nitrogen but the process is sensitive and requires close monitoring. Hydroxylamine is an indicator of anammox bacteria performance. Precise monitoring of ammonia hydroxylamine and other factors is crucial for optimizing wastewater treatment. OndaVia's instrument addresses this need by providing real-time data for process control. This process control will address energy efficiency and renewable energy in the wastewater treatment process. OndaVia's approach incorporates an internal standard for accurate measurement and surpasses limitations of traditional SERS methods. They are collaborating with industry leaders to ensure successful development and commercialization of this innovative technology that addresses the needs of a $2.4 billion market.
