Research abstract

Sonalysts, Inc.’s (Sonalysts) main goal for this Research and Development (R&D) effort is to develop, demonstrate, and deliver solutions to enable data accessibility and understandability for a wide range of authorized data consumers of DHRA, who are currently limited by data stovepipes. To achieve this goal, Sonalysts proposes utilizing a human-centered approach to develop the Visual, Accessible, Secure, Consumer-Oriented (VASCO) data discoverability platform. VASCO will employ a human-centered approach to first understand who is being given access, what their level of proficiency is with data and data analytics, and how they intend to use the data. Sonalysts will use this approach to derive system requirements that are built around data consumers to ensure that data exploration is intuitive and that the data is presented in a way that is actionable. To that end, VASCO will provide a means for data discoverability, allowing seamless access to understandable metadata, tailored to the mental models of its authorized users.Sonalysts will leverage our TRL9 Targeted Ideation Development Event (TIDE) process to gain early insights into data consumers and co-design intuitive visual metaphors. This proven, repeatable process uses a structure of divergent and convergent methods to gain an understanding of a wide range of users and their priorities and needs, develop requirements grounded in this understanding, and drive toward a clear consensus and prioritization. Sonalysts’ human-centered design approach will be anchored by the TIDE and bolstered by additional knowledge elicitation engagement, which will enable rapid validation and contextualization of the Moments that Matter (MTM) delineated in the Service Member and Veterans Journey Map (SMJVM) such that it can be used as a foundational artifact for VASCO. Sonalysts will develop personas, journey maps, and workflow models based on the findings of our knowledge elicitation efforts. These artifacts will enable us to design and develop the VASCO interface and architecture by first integrating workflow models with system orchestration in order to determine the subset of data architecture/ system entities which provide input to the MTM along a given consumer journey. VASCO will use a configurable orchestration service to represent data interconnections and make them available for analysis, removing barriers to data access. Ultimately, we envision an Impact Level 4 (IL4) cloud-hosted solution that features Service-oriented Architecture (SOA) to promote rapid development, scalability, and reuse. VASCO’s flexible architecture and design will enable data to be explored while ensuring data consumers do not get lost trying to navigate large, complex, unintelligible data sets.
