Research abstract

Although the transit industry has made great strides in the advancement of its bus products related to clean operation, there remain fundamental challenges associated with poor energy intensity, high capital and operating costs, low ridership, operational constraints, driver safety, pedestrian safety, and overall community mobility. In addition, exciting new technologies are coming to market, including component electrification, system control software, and vehicle automation that can be used to help solve them. OneBus proposes to develop and commercialize a ôright-sized busö that is network enabled to serve the wide range of transit community needs in an optimized way. OneBus will design, validate, and produce a modern, modular, 28-foot, low-floor, all-electric, ADA-compliant, heavy duty transit bus that can be combined or decoupled throughout the day to meet the wide variety of transit and shuttle operational needs. To complement the vehicle, a passenger network demand platform will be implemented to allow operators to effectively serve the community. While this paradigm shift is intended to improve operational efficiency and environmental impact, this novel design is a bottom up approach that is fundamentally focused on benefits to the rider, improving quality of service and increasing ridership. In Phase 1, OneBus principals will complete the conceptual design of a modern, modular, 28-foot, lowfloor, all-electric, ADA-compliant, heavy duty transit bus that is optimized for the vast majority of demands but can be combined or decoupled throughout the day to meet the full spectrum of transit and shuttle operational needs. To ensure effective and efficient mobility service with the vehicles, a passenger network demand platform will also be developed to allow operators to effectively serve the community. OneBus will leverage state-of-the-art technology, research, and design techniques in order to meet efficiency, performance, reliability, and cost targets. The result will be a novel transit mobility system with community benefits that are much greater than the sum of its parts. The OneBus vehicle and system is designed to be used by transit agencies to effectively and efficiently replace all existing 35-foot, 40-foot, 60-foot, and cutaway buses and serve the entirety of operations, from fixed routes to on-demand or paratransit. In the process, OneBus will also improve the rider experience by reducing trip time, improving safety (to driver, passenger, and pedestrian), and improving ride quality using the latest technological advancements.
