Research abstract
Opto-ID: A Dynamic Multifactor Authentication System Leveraging Biometrics and Functional Behavior Opto-ID is an innovative multifactor authentication system that combines advanced technologies such as ultrasonics, free space optics, photoacoustics, wireless energy transfer, edge computing, and event-driven machine vision to provide secure and reliable user authentication in diverse operating environments. The system aims to address the limitations of traditional single-mode biometric authentication methods, which can be compromised in challenging conditions or when biometric scans are obstructed. Opto-ID's unique approach lies in its ability to incorporate both biometric data and functional behavioral analysis in the authentication process. By capturing and analyzing an individual's specific patterns of interaction with the authentication device alongside their unique physical characteristics, Opto-ID creates a robust, multi-layered authentication mechanism that is significantly more difficult to spoof or circumvent compared to traditional biometric systems. The system leverages free space optics and photoacoustics to capture high-resolution biometric data, such as fingerprints, facial features, and iris patterns, even in non-ideal conditions. Ultrasonics and wireless energy transfer technologies enable contactless biometric sensing and power delivery, making the system more hygienic and user-friendly. Edge computing and event-driven machine vision allow for real-time processing and analysis of authentication data directly on the device, reducing the need for constant communication with centralized servers and enabling faster, more efficient authentication processes. Opto-ID's adaptability and resilience make it particularly well-suited for military operations, where personnel often face harsh environments and operational constraints that can hinder traditional biometric authentication methods. By providing a reliable means of identifying personnel in challenging conditions, Opto-ID can significantly enhance the security and integrity of military systems and assets, aligning with the Army's ICAM modernization efforts and its adoption of the Zero Trust security model.
