Research abstract

There is a need to update DoD/Army identity, credential, and access management (ICAM) systems. ĀCurrent authentication methods require the end user to remember specific information, such as a complex password, sometimes a token or keycard (CAC) is also requested. ĀAny new ICAM credential and system will need to use innovative approaches and solutions to integrate biometrics as one of several factors in multi-factor authentication (MFA), aligning with the DoD's ICAM modernization strategy and Zero Trust principles. The challenge lies in adapting biometric authentication, such as fingerprint and facial recognition, to the tactical environment of the Army, where soldiers may face constraints hindering traditional biometric usage. The goal is to create a small form-factor device that securely encodes (not encrypts) authentication data, biometrics, passwords, etc. utilizing biometric criteria for access in dynamic and resource-constrained environments. ĀDepending on the constraints, a Soldier may not be able to expose one, or many of their fingers, face, eyes, or voice for recognition. ĀAny new ICAM credential and system needs to operate under Denied, Disrupted, Intermittent, or Limited (DDIL) conditions. ĀAny new ICAM credential and system should support new and existing hardware and systems with support for future authentication devices. ĀArchitecture Technology Corporation (ATCorp) proposes SCMART: Serverless Credential with Many-factor Authentication and Recognition Technology. ĀSCMART is an innovative system designed to address the identified problems. Ā
