Research abstract

AretÚ proposes a Detection, Tracking and Identification system nicknamed Automated Laser Interrupt for Airspace Safety (ALIAS). ALIAS is a passive, low Size Weight and Power (SWAP) system that exploits the performance of different sensors, combined with novel algorithms and real time processing, for robust detection of aircraft at extended ranges, day and night.á ALIAS provides simultaneous detection and tracking of multiple targets within the field of regard in real-time. áOutputs can range from a simple digital signal to image-based symbology or audible reports. ALIAS is an extension of previous AretÚ IRAD and CRAD work, directed at detection, tracking and classification of airborne targets.á Development of ALIAS to support aircraft avoidance for small telescopes using passive detection is an obvious low risk extension of AretÚĺs development efforts. AretÚ will design, build and test breadboard and prototype versions of ALIAS in the Phase II effort.á On-sky tests without a laser beacon will be conducted to demonstrate system performance to assure readiness for deployment at a test site that includes a laser beacon.á On-sky tests at a relevant observatory will also be conducted. Performance analysis of on-sky collection, and resulting design modifications, and a plan for low-rate production are program products.
