Research abstract

This effort aims to address the need to add a constructive medical model to improve the wargaming capabilities of the Neller Wargaming and Analysis Center (NWAC). Wargaming is an important tool used to develop decision-making abilities by presenting large scale, realistically simulated scenarios. Accounting for the impacts of casualties during a mission, throughout all echelons of care, is an important part of the overall decision-making process. This proposed effort focuses on the two parametrics of interest for NWAC: echelon of care and its related time requirements. IVIR Inc. and its team propose the development of a Constructive Medical Model (CMM). The CMM will model casualty entities based on injury type and associated treatments throughout the echelons of care. The team will conduct research to identify the necessary data structure to support the CMM and will use clinical practice guidelines and historical data from the Joint Trauma System to generate injury, treatment, and provider skill level data for use in the CMM. The model will include input variables such as injury type, associated treatments, and required timelines and medical provider skill sets at each echelon of care. The model will also account for limiting variables like available providers and supplies available at each echelon. The CMM will output data related to the casualty entity status, rate of recovery, rate of degradation, and a casualty’s ability to return to battle. Since medical outcomes are highly variable between different casualties, even with the same injuries, many outputs will be on a “sliding scale” and will rely on critical break points to determine the likelihood of a casualty returning to duty. The proposed CMM will be designed to account for varying levels of complexity and fidelity and will be expandable for use cases beyond the needs of the NWAC.
