Research abstract

At a workshop hosted by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, Dr Jon Gandy, Emergency Medicine Specialist, highlighted that in Tactical Combat Casualty Care (TCCC), 87% of combat deaths occur during En route Care (see Figure 1), with 24% being potentially preventable with most being caused by hemorrhage.1  En-route Care is defined as the process of transporting patients from an initial point of injury throughout the entire continuum of care. Identifying the need to improve En-route Care, the DoD Joint Trauma System (JTS) established the Committee on En Route Combat Casualty Care (CoERCCC) to create practice guidelines, recommend training standards, and identify research priorities.   The committee identified 10 critical research topics to support operational En-route Care needs with the top three being (1) Medical Documentation (2) Clinical Decision Support (3) Patient Monitoring.
