Research abstract

Bryka Inc. is tackling the challenge of limitations in RF switch technology within 6U VPX systems that prevent effective management of a broad frequency spectrum due to size, weight, power, and cooling constraints. This affects critical applications like SIGINT and ESM. The U.S. Navy faces operational challenges due to this inefficiency in handling a wide frequency range in a compact, power-efficient manner, which compromises the effectiveness of naval intelligence-gathering and processing operations. Bryka Inc. has previously developed a highly integrated ultra-wideband 4×4 non-blocking switch matrix module. Building on this foundation, Bryka plans to evolve the existing 4x4 matrix into a more complex 16x12 matrix configuration to address the limitations faced by current 6U VPX systems. The initial design combined Microwave Integrated Circuit (MMIC) technology with a Low-Temperature Co-fired Ceramic (LTCC) substrate to cover a frequency band from 1.5 MHz to 18 GHz. This combination facilitated efficient channel switching and power distribution, with the LTCC substrate enabling seamless transmission across multiple layers. The expansion to a 16x12 switch matrix will employ a hierarchical network design, integrating multiple MMIC switch arrays and power dividers onto LTCC substrates, thus enhancing the RF signal routing capacity significantly. Additional layers on the LTCC substrate will be introduced to manage the increased routing complexity, optimizing signal paths to ensure signal integrity and minimize crosstalk, thereby maintaining non-blocking functionality across the entire frequency range. The proposed non-blocking RF switch, designed for integration into a 6U VPX system, will comply with the ANSI/VITA 46.0 VPX Baseline Standard. This advanced switch matrix, capable of routing 16 input apertures to 12 output tuner channels, will support dynamic reconfiguration in line with SOSA guidelines. The design focuses on robust performance metrics such as gain, isolation, noise figure, and switching speed, ensuring compliance with necessary APIs and ICDs for integration into U.S. Government Labs. Bryka's RF switch technology is particularly well-suited to key U.S. Navy applications, including SATCOM enhancements for MUOS satellites, Electronic Warfare (EW) system upgrades on ships equipped with the AN/SLQ-32 system, radar improvements for the Aegis Combat System, and enhanced ISR capabilities for platforms like the P-8A Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft. This technological advancement promises significant operational benefits, aligning with the Navy's strategic requirements for improved communication, intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance capabilities.
