Research abstract

The 147th Air Support Operations Squadron (ASOS) is a proven strategic partner with an innovation mindset focused on supporting the tactical air control party (TACP) and United States Air Force (USAF) enterprise. The 147 ASOS is part of over 5,000 Texas Air National Guard members supporting active duty, global state partnership programs, and state humanitarian missions. 147 ASOS/TACP have a unique set of capabilities that afford them the ability to conduct search and rescue efforts, border security, and joint terminal attack controller (JTAC) responsibilities. This requires them to often be positioned on the forward edge of the battlespace subjected to hazardous conditions dislocated from a main operating location. These operators and leaders need resilient, effective, and survivable technologies capable of empowering Agile Combat Employment (ACE) initiatives to overcome anti-access, area denial (A2AD) environments. Legionarius (teaming with goTenna) will create a solution that can be used to organize, train, and equip Airmen with technology that can save lives by providing near real-time awareness of Airmen health through AFRL's Team Awareness Kit (TAK), including at the edge or in off-grid environments. The Legionarius ôSmart Garmentö (i.e., uniform or Wound Detection Shirt) is capable of detecting vital signs and penetrating wounds to the warfighter (shot, shrapnel, cut, burn), autonomously sending out an alert via Android Tactical Assault Kit (ATAK) and the Air Force Battlefield Assisted Trauma Distributed Observation Kit (BATDOK) system for instant casualty reporting and tracking. The system automatically and instantly provides the following information to the relevant parties: How many casualties? Who specifically is injured? What type of wound? What are the current (and historic) vital signs? Where and When did the injury occur on the battlefield? Problem: Currently, the only way to identify if a warfighter has been injured is through traditional verbal communication methods or input via typing into information systems. Both efforts require human-in-the-loop actions. Opportunity: The Smart Garment can sense vital signs and penetrating impact to the body (shot, shrapnel, cut, and burn), and can autonomously send out an alert via ATAK, BATDOK, and the Armyĺs Medical Hands-free Unified Broadcast (MEDHUB) system using goTennaĺs Pro X mesh radio networks. Sending this alert gives medics a head start and to reduce the time from point of injury to point of treatment. Legionariusĺ Smart Garment can provide the ability to transmit critical information through mesh networks for near real-time decision making. Legionarius will enable the USAF to have instant knowledge of injury, including GPS location, location on the body, current and historic vital signs, and other critical information that displays on ATAKĺs Common Operating Picture (COP).
