Research abstract

Metron proposes to research, design, and develop a Coordinated Operations Planning and Analysis System (COPAS) to enable theater wide planning for coordinated manned and unmanned ASW operations. As unmanned assets and supporting technologies are developed and fielded in the Fleet, additional planning and analysis tools are needed to effectively employ them alongside other unmanned and manned assets in support of theater level coordinated Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) operations. Although basic tools exist that provide some ability to model and assess individual sensor performance given a limited number of variables, a single holistic approach and system does not exist to comprehensively evaluate multi-platform performance and tradeoffs for coordinated unmanned and manned operations. To deliver a meaningful warfighting capability, Metron will research and develop the innovate algorithms and processing techniques needed to 1) identify, ingest, curate, and process vast amounts of disparate data and variable mission objectives, 2) model and optimize coordinated unmanned and manned ASW asset area placement, and 3) deliver an intuitive user experience and information visualization approach that eases the cognitive burden on the planning staff.  Additionally, Metron will architect COPAS to support integration and the refinement of mature technologies and services needed to deliver an effective planning and analysis system and establish or identify the machine-to-machine interfaces needed to simplify and automate the ingestion of input data required to adequately characterize mission intent, operational limitations, friendly and threat assets and sensors, and the operational environment.
