Research abstract

Gravitics is developing lithium-titanate oxide (LTO) battery systems to fill an under-served but critical niche in the current generation of lithium batteries, offering higher power density, better life cycle endurance, and enhanced safety through low thermal rise and reduced combustibility. There is demand across the Armed Forces for portable power, and Gravitics meets this need with a safe and durable product, complemented by the Think Orbital battery management system. Gravitics LTO Battery Systems adapt COTS LTO batteries and ThinkOrbital's Battery Management System into an integrated, space-rated battery solution that provides the following key benefits: Power Density: >290 W/kg Endurance: 60k cycles at 80% depth of discharge, highest usable energy density at >30-40k cycles (~7yrs in LEO) Safety: Inherently lower flammability than other Lithium-Ion chemistries In this proposed Phase I effort, Gravitics will perform customer research to validate applications for the deployment of this LTO battery architecture in civilian and DoD use cases, with emphasis on space applications. Gravitics will use existing data and new, internally-captured data to demonstrate technical capabilities and key metrics. Results will be presented to stakeholders across the DoD.
