Research abstract

The 4th Space Operations Squadron (4SOPS) maintains multiple satellite constellations, which serve over 300,000 US and Allied Forces. 4SOPS currently manages scheduling satellite supports for these constellations using Genesis, a system for manually scheduling requests that is being deprecated on December 31, 2024; because of this, 4SOPS desperately needs a new system that can not only fulfill the role of the old system but add new functionality to autonomously schedule Mission Operations Requests. Stottler Henke proposes to apply our highly commercially successful Aurora Intelligent Planning and Scheduling Framework to 4SOPS Space Resource Automatic Scheduling Mission Operation Requests (MORs), which will provide the capability to autonomously track and deconflict the numerous day-to-day, routine, and emergency operations 4SOPS plans and executes. Aurora generates similar schedules in minutes superior (measured by tasks scheduled with a fixed amount of resources) to schedules produced over a man-day by humans, which is essential when using expensive equipment. This capability has already been demonstrated in the specific satellite support scheduling domain through MARS/MIDAS and additional operation domains for Boeing, General Dynamics Electric Boat, etc. Autonomous scheduling offers additional advantages such as rapid responsive rescheduling, lower operating costs, reduced training requirements, and better information compartmentalization.
