Research abstract

The PILOT spacecraft is a modular, multi-use space platform which is able to operate in very low Earth orbit for extended periods of time. With the ability to operate in VLEO in a controlled method, significant research data can be gathered. Systems such as communications, data transfer, hypersonics, and air breathing electric propulsion all include aspects which can be improved by using data gathered by PILOT. The platform can also be used to map the ionosphere and benchmark/improve computational models to predict space weather and atmospheric properties.ĀThe spacecraft is enabled by the use of high thrust TierDrop engines which require minimal electric power in a very compact form factor.
