Research abstract

HADES advances Space Domain Awareness (SDA) by enabling sustained operations in Very Low Earth Orbit (VLEO), addressing the need for enhanced space monitoring as adversaries develop maneuverable space assets that threaten U.S. superiority. Persistent SDA in VLEO as critical to maintaining operational advantage, ensuring real-time situational awareness, and enhancing the resilience of military space assets.VLEO offers lower latency, higher-resolution imaging, and improved RF signal interception, enhancing SDA capabilities. However, these benefits come with engineering challenges, including heightened atmospheric drag, increased atomic oxygen exposure, and rapid orbital decay. Without a dedicated U.S. presence, adversaries could exploit these advantages unchallenged, leading to a strategic imbalance.HADES is a cost-effective, modular solution engineered to overcome these challenges. Integrating a high-thrust TierDrop propulsion system optimized for drag compensation and station-keeping, it enables  missions at altitudes between 200and 300 kilometers. An aerodynamic form factor minimizes cross sectional area to reduce drag experienced by the spacecraft, while maintaining payload volume. The modular payload section allows for rapid payload integration, supporting a range of SDA applications, including space weather monitoring, RF spectrum analysis, and adversary activity tracking.Phase II will advance HADES' Technology Readiness Level (TRL) by developing an engineering structural mass model and refinement of performance simulations. Key objectives include constructing a high-fidelity structural model, refining the spacecraft’s design through lifetime simulations, and validating drag reduction techniques. Additionally, the program will enhance autonomous constellation management and tasking, ensuring dynamic operational adaptability and mission responsiveness to meet stakeholder needs.Establishing a low-cost, rapidly deployable VLEO platform is essential for maintaining U.S. space dominance. HADES fills a critical capability gap by enabling persistent SDA in an orbital regime where traditional satellites struggle to operate. Its affordability and adaptability ensure scalability, allowing for proliferated deployments that enhance resilience space capabilities.Neglecting VLEO risks ceding strategic advantages to adversaries in this emerging operational domain. HADES provides the U.S. military with an unprecedented SDA capability, ensuring decision advantage and operational superiority in future conflicts.
