Research abstract

Stress has a devastating effect on the physiological and social health of our warfighters. Suicide, alcoholism, and substance abuse continue to rise at alarming rates, undermining the combat readiness and longevity of the warfighter. Battlefield stressors, home life, task shifting, and an ever-arising array of new, politically charged challenges strain warfighter capability and jeopardize mission success when left unaddressed.   Our proposed study encompasses a 90-day investigation aimed at evaluating the impact of various stress and burnout mitigation techniques, promising a transformative approach to enhancing warfighter resilience and mission readiness. This project recognizes the unique challenges faced by these operators, including the necessity for sharp situational and bodily awareness, robust emotional and self-regulation, and the ability to manage complex, high-stakes tasks effectively. Atrophy of brain regions, resulting from repeated exposure to stressful conditions, has a cognitive cost. Indeed, working memory, attention, response inhibition and cognitive flexibility have all been found to be impaired by stress (Girotti et al., 2017). At work, impairments in these domains translate to a reduced ability to concentrate, control our impulses, remember and plan. Thus, stress hindered performance. The proposed MindGym Stroboscopic Therapy is designed as a comprehensive solution, serving as a therapeutic intervention for Stress and Burnout Mitigation. The modality is structured around proven stroboscopic and immersive techniques. The exciting findings of the efficacy of brainwave entrainment position stroboscopic therapies as a promising avenue for psychological enhancement and a potentially more accessible “plug-and-play” alternative to meditation, which is especially relevant considering the high attrition rates commonly observed in meditation practices. The effectiveness of the protocols will be measured via entrainment analysis.   A significant aspect of this project is its focus on a demographic at risk for burnout attributed to high-stress work environments and/or lifestyles.  The stroboscopic therapeutic interventions will be divided into two session types to measure Alpha and Theta brain frequencies. Each program's audio and visual components are designed to complement and enhance each other. The audio elements are meticulously synchronized with the visual cues provided by the LEDs, creating a cohesive, immersive experience. A combination of fluctuating stroboscopic patterns, color, brightness, and movement entrain the Alpha & Theta states in the brain. The reflective nature of the chamber amplifies the visual effects, creating a sense of envelopment and depth that can deepen the impact of each session. Success will be measured by brainwave entrainment analysis (whether or not Alpha or Theta brainwave states were induced) as well as by behavioral assays to understand how the therapy affected the end users from a psychological perspective.
