Research abstract

Spacecraft developers have an unmet need for high specific strength and stiffness carbon fiber parts capable of operating in the space environment to enable lower structural mass and increase ability to maneuver without regret. There are many resins that support infusion into carbon fiber composites. However, there are few resins that are qualified to operate in the hard environment of space. This project proposes development of a new resin that operates in the environment of space and supports low-cost resin transfer molding (RTM). During Phase I Atomic-6 plans to research resin formulation from commercially available Novolak resin components and additives to result in a space capable resin.
